3 concepts from the vodcast article

The main concept that I learned from this article was the idea of using the creation of a podcast/vodcast for collaboration by students. I believe that when students are brainstorming ideas this gives them the chance to learn on so many different levels. Each student brings their own life experiences to the conversation. At a high school level, usually, students believe that their way is the only way. This collaboration allows the students to listen to others ideas, hear other life experiences, and receive constructive criticism. It also allows them to learn to get along and compromise with others. Allowing the students to work on their own teaches them a little self direction and self control with guidance from their teacher.
Another valuable reason to bring vodcasting into the classroom is, of course, the introduction of technology. Using a visual and auditory tool like this in your classroom will surely stimulate learning of your lesson. It will appeal to the more creative, musical and artistic learner, as well. I do believe we have to keep in mind that some students may be intimated by the process. So, there does have to be some sort of technologic support. If not by the teacher maybe a tutorial from the technology department. Also, I think there maybe great value for some of our special needs students. Vodcasting seems like a great opportunity for a cross curriculum project. After educating myself more in the use of technology in the classroom I would love to have a few single and group vodcast projects in my curriculum. The reason for this is for all the reasons I mentioned in the above paragraph. In health care we must learn how to listen to the ideas of others, collaborate and create the best way to treat and care for our patients.
The last concept I liked from the article was the idea of sharing information with others at a more convenient time for the learner. It was interesting how they used vodcasts to alleviate the anxiety of their learners. This idea of learning at a more convenient time can also be helpful in the classroom if someone has missed a significant amount of time due to illness or injury and again may be stimulating for the special needs students.

21st Century Skills

Digital age and literacy
The only academic class taught in the vocational school that I work in is social studies so there is not a lot of scientific literacy’s being taught. But, the social studies class does use web casting daily embedded into their lecture. The teachers in this class do teach economics in this country as well as others.
There is beginning to be a small increase in our Hispanic population. We do not recognize this in the way of projects, foods or social organizations. There is not a picture in the building that represents any other ethnic background but Caucasian. Perhaps this is an area I can be effective with the staff and students because of my background working with vast amounts of other cultures in a hospital setting.
Unfortunately in the short time I have been in the school the technology department has decreased to a mere few that are not as talented as previous employees. Most have moved on for more pay to other schools. I hope this improves.

Effective communication
We have a mutual respect for each others expertise in fields of education but since we all teach our area of expertise from tenth to twelfth grade there is no horizontal or vertical shared information academically as far as curriculum.
We do collaborate well as far as giving to the community. I do health fairs and blood drives. The carpentry and masonry areas fix up parks and fields. Culinary arts does a lot with food pantries and we all come out to support each others events. This is both student and staff collaboration.

Inventive thinking
All of our students are taught to adapt to changing situations, manage complex thinking and be self directed. Especially in the field of nursing. I cannot be everywhere all the time. The students must learn to adapt to the condition of a patient changing as well as the needs of the unit.
All though I would not want them to risk take on the clinical unit. I do need them to use a higher order of thinking and reasoning for the safety of the patients.
There is so much change in the administration in the school where I teach staff needs to be adaptive and creative to manage there classroom safely and efficiency.

High Productivity
“Down sizing” has got to be the mantra of the work world. Fewer employees need to do more work. Therefore student must be taught to organize and prioritize. A nurse cannot function efficiently if she does not take care of the most critical situations first and delegate menial tasks to others.
Technology has been a great tool to us in health care as far as figuring out intravenous and medication calculations, the delivery of pharmaceuticals and easing documentation of patients.

Interactive White Board-Three Concepts Learned

One thing that I learned from the article was about the art of asking better questions. The idea that teachers are asking more questions may not be the best way to get a quality answer. If I reflect on my own teaching I guess I do have a predetermined answer in my head and expect the student to come up with the answer I am looking for. We should require students to answer questions longer and with more words to prepare for explanations in the real world. For example a boss may ask why an extra worker was called in for the evening shift the student/future worker should be able to respond with a complete and justifiable answer. On some level I believe this will also bust their confidence and improve employability skills.
The article brought up the idea of teacher versus pupil control in the classroom. An Idea I have never been exposed to. Just how much control should the two players in this arena have? After all Dewey suggested that both parties arise from their learning experience with something to take with them. Either positive or negative. The author goes on to speak about different levels of interactivity in the classroom such as lecturing, funneling, probing, focusing and reflection. My own belief is that a combination of many or all of these is the best way to manage your classroom. The teacher can control the knowledge learned that they expect from their students when teaching at some of the lower levels. Also, the student can still formulate his/her own opinions, thoughts or ideas when using some of the higher level of teaching.
Lastly, that technology in the classroom has to be used correctly to be effective. Just by using a power point presentation in your classroom may not be the best use of technology. It would be better to allow the student to be more actively involved by coming to the interactive white board and working with it themselves. Another example of poor use of technology is using the interactive white board as a projector. Today, in class, I was “forced” to use the white board in class for the first time. I think it helped alleviate some fears. Thanks!

Do interactive communication tools lead to interactive learning? Why or why not?
Yes. If used properly.
The best evidence I can use to answer this question was today’s assignment. I was never so engaged in a class than I was today. The presentations began, and before I knew it, I was standing, clapping, picking someone to pick someone else to answer a question and writing on the IWB.
I learned about bugs, saving energy and American Indians all in one class.
I used and saw technology like I have never seen before. There were exciting words, sounds, pictures, movies and games. People were laughing and volunteering to be a part of the lesson!
In summary by taking what I have learned, using the computer and the interactive white board made for the best interactive class I have ever had.

How can educators be sure to use interactive communication tools to their best potential? List and describe three main ideas.
First I believe educators need to become educated themselves in the use of technology. They need to take classes such as this one, and maybe more, to keep up with the changing trends in technology. Teachers need to be interested in changing the way they teach and encourage themselves to increase their knowledge and use of technology in the classroom.
Teachers need to be backed up by funds and supported by administration. Adequate funds for proper equipment such as computers, IWB’s and software need to be able to be purchased to use them. In class this was probably the obstacle I heard the most.
This also includes a technology department that can support the staff in these transitional times.
Teachers cannot become stagnant in the use of computer technology. Do not just be happy using the IWB as a projector but push themselves to learn more and have the students become more involved. My hope is someday soon we can see the benefits from studies that show increasing interaction and technology in the classroom today prepares our students for a better tomorrow.

Dewey

  1. Education helps in the continuation of social life. Each individual carries with it their own experiences in life and passes it on to others. If members do not pass on their experiences and beliefs it can mean the end of a social group. It seems as though there many times differences in the beliefs of the young and the beliefs of the old.
Just as if DNA is the physical nature of a surviving group of people so is
communication representative of a surviving social group.

  2. We cannot make formal education so important that we forget about the survival of
communication and society. When we educate we should make sure that the
learner and the teacher take something from the experience so life is worth living.
Only when education and learning become mundane and unimportant do they
loose their effect. So, all of us need to change as society changes. Technology is
    the genre of today’s change.

  3. Persons are not a society because of how close they live by each other. Some
relationships occur only so one person gets what they want from the association.
There generally is a hierarchy in a society. Because two people interact with each
other does not mean communication occurs.

Blooms Taxonomy

The level of Bloom’s taxonomy that I experienced the most in my primary and secondary education was remembering and understanding. I grew up in the time of writing your spelling words and memorizing multiplication tables many times and had to do the same even at home. In high school I can remember taking notes for hours then tested on the standard written exam. We did not have fancy biology labs or well equipped audio visual departments. So experiments, dissecting or fun environmental outings were pretty much unheard of. I guess it was when I entered nursing school was when I was exposed to applied learning for the first time. Within two months we had to work in the hospital applying the information we had learned. Sometimes I think it bordered on slave labor. But, none the less we became very skilled in caring for patients effectively. As time passed on in nursing school the way we were educated began to change. It was not just dealing with everyday, mundane tasks during patient care but being able to analyze if a person was ill or in distress and when and who we should call. For example, if their vital signs and lab work were unstable. I do not believe there was some miraculous change in the face of education but that is how vocational nursing worked at the time.It has not been until recently, during graduate work, that I have been exposed to evaluating and reflecting on lessons that I have done. I am also trying to become more creative to keep students engaged. I have only been in this profession for a short time and hope I get to spend more time working in these areas.

Why should we, as educators, integrate technology into the curriculum?

One of the main reasons that technology should be integrated into the classroom is that students are becoming more and more comfortable using technology. Students frequently use cell phones, ipods, the Internet and various other devices on a daily basis. I think it is useful to tap into something they feel comfortable with as well as make education fun.
I believe the increase use of technology in the classroom allows students to take ownership of their own education and view teachers more as a facilitators.
There are many types of learners such as visual, auditory and tactile. Computers just add another dimension to catching the interest of the student and therefore increasing knowledge. I tend to forget that computers are not the only source for technology in the classroom. There are others such as interactive whiteboards and powerpoint presentations.
Just by introducing the internet into your classroom you are opening up the world to the student. They have access to almost everything. The key is to guide that information in the right direction.
Working in a vocational school I see the need for almost every trade using technology as an adjunct to traditional teaching methods from healthcare to automotive to computer animated drafting for some of our autistic students. Some of our special needs students really get “hooked in “ by the computer and at times it is the most effective way for them to learn. Generally, the more a student experiences active learning the more they will remember. I think preparing the students for the advancement of technology in the future prepares them for more “real world” situations.
Lastly, I do believe that the educator must feel comfortable with using technology to be more effective for the students. Just like the man in the Edutopia video I to have technophobia. I am hoping this class will help me get over that fear and integrate more technology in my life and in my classroom.
